![]() The end result is one of the most polished games I've come across in a long time. It would have been easy for the developers to have lost heart after the mistakes surrounding URU Live, and it's to Ubisoft's credit that it charged a new team with the task of continuing the story of 'linking books', mysterious worlds and a family of scientific explorers torn apart by inner strife. Put yourself in the right frame of mind and it's nearly impossible not to become captivated. Myst titles have consistently outsold most so-called 'mainstream' games, and with good reason. They may only be played by housewives and geography professors, but the ![]() One series refused to die though, mostly because by the time the genre hit its darkest hour it was one of the few games still managing to retain its class, style, intelligence and playability while surrounded by a sea of third-rate dross. In addition, the graphic quality deserves an award on its own, due to the truly huge amounts of work that went into designing the environments. The reason the point-and-click adventure died several years ago (apart from LucasArts leaving it behind to test the credibility of its Star Wars franchise instead), was that people got fed up with witnessing badly-rendered cutscenes loosely tying together a basic collection of parlour games, shoehorned into the proceedings with all the subtlety of Graham Norton at a prize cucumber judging contest. Myst IV may have been developed from the ground up by different developers than the original, but it is every bit as good, especially when it comes to the plot thickness and the puzzles put at your disposal. A fantastical world filled with mysteries In addition, there are also digital video sequences as well, in order to save disk space and spare your computer the work. Myst IV is no exception either, because it features some challenging riddles that should keep you thinking for quite some time, regardless of how experienced you are with the genre.īecause the game uses pre-rendered graphics in order to depict the many environments you have to visit throughout the story, a lot of work went into designing the landscapes and the objects that appear throughout the levels. The puzzles are yet another chapter that made the Myst franchise shine among the other adventure titles, since they were clever and complicated at the same time, with fairly logical solutions. Just like in the previous installments, your purpose is to travel between Ages, which are basically different dimensions, and dismantle the plot of the evil siblings, while rescuing the daughter in the process and helping Atrus with his family yet again. Naturally, things go south pretty quickly and soon enough Atrus' daughter, Yeesha, disappears along with the brothers. Thus, the two brothers who played the roles of the villains in the first game are the center of attention yet again, as their father, who trapped them between worlds, asks your help to check whether they have learned they lesson and are ready to come home, more than twenty years later. In Myst IV, some characters from the original title make a comeback and you get to tie up some loose ends from the beginning of the series. In addition, the puzzles that must be solved in order to advance are very difficult as well, although they are rewarding. The Myst series is among the most recognizable adventure games out there, especially since it has a long history of providing the fans with lengthy and well-crafted stories, filled with plot twists and memorable events.
